FLEET & EQUIPMENT
The MV Ya Toivo is Trans Hex Marine’s biggest diamond mining vessel. With an overall length of 149 meters and a width of 24 meters she is also one of the biggest offshore mining vessels in the world. She has a total of over 14000 kW of electric power installed that is available to run all equipment on board the vessel.
Build in 1984 and converted into a diamond mining vessel in 2000 she has undergone various refits and upgrades to keep her in line with the latest technologies with a proven and well established track record.
A 280-ton tracked ROV is lowered from her decks via a A-frame by a 450-ton capable hydraulic driven winch to mine the seabed up to a maximum depth of 150 meters.
The ROV is driven by a 500Kw Electrical HPU, the overall power supply and operational controls of the ROV are transferred via a Umbilical from the vessel, the system is operated from a central control room via fibre optics and Plc. control systems. During mining operations she can mine over a 1000m2 per hour and pump up to 1600 ton of diamond holding sand and gravel per hour into the separation plant. This is achieved with dredge pump driven by a 2.4mW electric motor and a 500kw electrical driven jetting system capable of loosening sediment with her 10 bar of jetting pressure. The ROV is capable of staying submerged for up to 7 to 10 days and keep mining continuously for 24 hours a day without any stoppages.
In the separation plant the diamonds get extracted from the gravel by mains of separation on size, density, fluorescence and lastly by hand so that in the end only diamonds are leaving the vessel.
To make this whole operation go smoothly the MV Ya Toivo has on average 90 people on board, of multiple nationalities, who run the operation continuously for 24 hours a day 365 days a year. To minimize downtime people, spares fuel and food get sent to the vessel by helicopter or supply boats. This way the vessel can stay out at sea without the need to ever go into port for periods exceeding 11 months.
