Geophysics

Seafloor mapping is largely done by means of Multibeam Echo sounding (MBES) from the 2 dedicated geophysical vessels, the “MV Good Wind” and the “MV DP Star”. The sea floor images that are produced, offer detailed bathymetric data and high resolution distinctions between surfaces of sediment or hard rock outcrops.

Seafloor areas covered by sediment are further explored in depth by means of sub-bottom profiling geophysical equipment that is run concurrently with the MBES acquisition from the “Good Wind” and the “DP Star”.

This enables the identification of individual sediment layer types and thicknesses down to the bedrock or footwall surface.

Computer generated 3D digital elevation models (DEM) of the bedrock/footwall topography are produced from the seismic data to optimally direct the planning of sample site selection to be undertaken by “The Explorer”.
